37th Street Lights

Every December for my friend Raquel's birthday, we would go see the crazy Christmas decorations lighting up Austin's 37th Street. Raquel now lives in Maryland but Allison, Jenny and I didn't want to give up the tradition. So I put Danny to bed, left Mark alone with his Xbox, and headed north of the river. The residents on the street are known for their nontraditional, sometimes disturbing, holiday themes. But we were a little disappointed.

It seems that those who traditionally put on a big show are moving away. And as the yuppies move in, the lights are becoming more tasteful and B-O-R-I-N-G! The volcano of lights did NOT spew smoke and steam from the roof every 5 minutes. The man who decorates his backyard with thousands of glowing yogurt containers and egg cartons is gone. And the tree with dozens of glistening CDs hanging from its limbs was bare. But we did capture a few gems (click to see a larger view)...
